One essential characteristic of textiles is their richly intertextual nature. Their contemporary appeal and historicity derive from their place in the history of art and culture as well as in the history of media, society, and technology. Representing traditions found in both applied and fine arts, textiles hover between formalism and functionalism; as objects and techniques, they mediate between relations to the self and relations to the world, between affect-driven and knowledge-driven processes of appropriation. Functionally versatile—as objects of utility and media of an abstract (visual) language—textiles read as the fulcrum of an ensemble of activities, and illustrate specific entanglements that, since the beginning of modernity, have transformed the relations between subject and object, the material and the immaterial, artistic and artisanal labor, and different cultures.

This publication examines the referential and analytical qualities of textiles through both contemporary and historical works. The contributions in this book reflect on the complex interplay between the various functions and connotations of textiles—such as the emphasis on their tactile qualities or the artistic value attributed to them—and the attendant conflicts and antagonisms that articulate relations of power and value and of the interaction of artistic processes with their overarching contexts.

Textiles: Open Letter stems from an exhibition at the Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach, and a research project (2010–14) initiated by Rike Frank and Grant Watson. “The idea for this exhibition arose when we were fortunate enough to be offered the famous Hess Guest Book. Around this nucleus we have planned a view of art in Germany between 1910 and 1939. With the generous help of many collectors and galleries we have been able to illustrate the varied aspects of this complex and important period of German art.”
The Guest Book was a two volume book-set that spanned the years 1907-1956. They were the guest books of the home of Industrialist Alfred Hess and Thekla Hess, who were great lovers and collectors of art. Their home in Erfurt regularly gathered together leading figures of the art, music and literature worlds, and their guest books collected the inscriptions, autographs, drawings and watercolours of these times.

With an introduction by professor and author Norbert Lynton, the first part of this catalogue reproduces works from The Guest Book, and the second full-colour and black and white reproductions of works in the exhibition of 1977. Includes a full catalogue of the works.

“Bauhaus: Art as Life” explores the diverse artistic production and turbulent 14-year history of the modern world’s most famous art school. Accompanying the biggest Bauhaus exhibition in the United Kingdom in more than 40 years, this catalogue features a rich array of painting, sculpture, design, architecture, film, photography, textiles, ceramics, theatre and installation, ranging from the school’s Expressionist beginnings to its pioneering utopian model of uniting art and technology in order to change society in the aftermath of the First World War. Exemplary works from such Bauhaus masters as Josef and Anni Albers, Marianne Brandt, Marcel Breuer, Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Hannes Meyer, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Gunta Stolzl are presented alongside works by lesser-known artist masters and Bauhaus students. The catalogue also includes a series of original writings by Bauhaus artists, drawn from previously published texts and personal correspondence.
