Painting as Action

After the second world war, a number of painters in different parts of the world began to attack painting’s fundamental assumptions in ways that were at once both aggressive and playful. The creative act itself was as important as the painting that resulted from it.

In this borderland between painting and performance, chance or the spectator were often recruited as co-creators of the work. In recent years, interest in performance art has increased, and with it interest in its roots.

Explosion! Painting as Action explores the connections and cross fertilisations between painting, performance and conceptual art. Featured artists include the Japanese Gutai group, Lynda Benglis, Cai Guo-Qiang, Allan Kaprow, Yves Klein, Rivane Neuenschwander, Jackson Pollock, Carolee Schneemann, Shozo Shimamoto and Yoko Ono.

Published to accompany the exhibition at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, 2 June – 9 September 2012.

Conceived more as an artists book, “Synthetic Voices” is the perfect scrapbook of Mark’s iconic work throughout the 1990’s for Purple, Self Service, Interview, Vogue Italia, etc., alongside his personal photography work, texts, photographs of Maison Martin Margiela, Hussein Chalayan, Comme des Garçons, Paul McCarthy, Patti Smith, Kate Moss, Chloe Sevigny, Rita Ackerman, Kim Gordon, Sinead O’connor, and much more. An amazing photographer who captured and inspired an important period in fashion photography with his playful, natural, poetic and raw images.

One day I went to interview Dan Graham about the legendary John Daniels Gallery in New York, which he ran from 1964 to ’65. Right after I arrived, Dan started talking to me about Michel Butor and his fascination with the writer’s work back in the 1960s. I merely asked: “And did you ever meet him?” Dan answered: “No. Some people wanted to introduce us, but it never happened.” I asked: “And would you like to meet him?” And he said, with his very own smile: “Of course I would.”

In the fall of 2013, Dan Graham and Mieko Meguro traveled with Donatien Grau to a town in the French Alps to meet Michel Butor, one of the foremost innovators of postwar literature. This is their conversation.

Michel Butor is a writer. He redefined the genre of the novel, notably with Second Thoughts (1957), further developing new forms with Mobile (1962) and other fundamental works.

Dan Graham is an artist. A major retrospective of his work was held in 2009 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Whitney Museum, New York; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.

It has been argued, most notably in psychoanalytic and modernist art discourse, that the production of works of art is fundamentally driven by sexual desire. It has been further argued, particularly since the early 1970s, that sexual drives and desires also condition the distribution, display and reception of art.

This anthology traces how and why this identification of art with sexual expression or repression arose and how the terms have shifted in tandem with artistic and theoretical debates, from the era of the rights movements to the present. Among the subjects it discusses are abjection and the “informe,” or formless; pornography and the obscene; the performativity of gender and sexuality; and the role of sexuality in forging radical art or curatorial practices in response to such issues as state-sponsored repression and anti-feminism in the broader social realm.
