TEXTE ZUR KUNST #99
September 2015 "Phototgraphy"

Decades following the rise of computer aided design and the aesthetic-theoretical debates that coincided, it might seem late, at this point, to place a spotlight on photography. After all, hardly anyone defends photography’s loyalty to the analog index anymore, or mourns the medium specificities of centuries past. And yet, who can dispute that the photograph has become the primary base for establishing identity now, for cohering a social body; one that, as the substrate across which today’s human subject is drawn, stands as, in a sense, our material support? As the image’s gaze has become omnipresent, it is perhaps prime time to ask how do we now understand photo-media to operate? What information do we expect it to carry? What facts do we trust it to convey?

“I have something for you, I’ll send it over. You know for four years now I have been trying to propagate shiso and it hasn’t grown. I tried everything: freezing and thawing the seeds, leaving them in the dark for a year, different temperatures and humidity… The seeds Taro sent me in February came up no problem, just in fine soil with a sheet of paper over the pot outside, no special equipment or lights. Crazy. The kitchen garden at home is now being taken over by green shiso plants with huge leaves everywhere. We have a glut, as the English call it. Fearful of it not reseeding and growing next year I’ve been stripping the leaves and producing shiso sugar syrup and shiso-infused vodka. The vodka is unbelievably good! I thought of proposing it to ABSOLUT as a new flavour. We’ll see. Anyway, I have a bottle for you! ”

Kinomuseum
Towards An Artists' Cinema

A collection of texts by critics (Lucian Harris, “The Art Newspaper”), curators (Ian White, Whitechapel and Emily Pethick, Casco Projects) and artists (Morgan Fisher and Dan Graham), this publication takes on the timely challenge of conceptualizing a museum designed to exhibit film and video works whose meaning is contingent on the context of cinema.

FLUITEN IN HET DONKER (Whistling in the Dark)
Ed. de Appel Curatorial Programme 2010/2011

Fluiten in het Donker (Whistling in the Dark) is a publication conceived along-side the eponymous group exhibition curated by de Appel Curatorial Programme 2010-2011. The book is not stricto sensu an exhibition catalogue. It is the trouble mirror of a curatorial research – a collection of texts and images related to the show and guided by the evolving internal dialogue of a fictive curatorial narrator. Artists presented within the exhibition and discussed in the publication are Absalon, Samuel Beckett, Pierre Bismuth, Tania Bruguera, Jenny Holzer, René Magritte and others.
