The original two-volume Japanese slipcase edition, published in conjunction with the exhibition “Love Forever: Yayoi Kusama, 1958-1968” which travelled between Japan and the US in 1999. This edition was available for the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo staging of the exhibition, and has been long out of print. Both volumes here are lavishly illustrated throughout with colour photographs of Yayoi Kusama’s history of work – the first book (“Love Forever: Yayoi Kusama, 1958-1968”) being a catalogue for the exhibition, featuring essays and documentation of the works in the exhibit spanning the years 1958-1968, including her New York happenings, whilst the second book (“In Full Bloom: Yayoi Kusama, Years in Japan”) illuminates many rarely seen works outside of Japan. Accompanied by texts, an interview and an exhibition history, this book is broken into the sections 1945-1959, 1970-1999 and is densely illustrated with colour documentation of her work created in Japan. Together chronicling Kusama’s life of creating work across painting, collage, soft sculpture, performance art, and environmental installations, of which most exhibit her thematic interest in psychedelic colours, repetition, and pattern, this comprehensive and collectable publication illustrates an extremely influential artist’s life of work. Based in conceptual art, Kusama’s work shows attributes of Feminism, Minimalism, Surrealism, Art Brut, Pop Art, Nouvelle Tendence (Op, Kinetic, etc.) and Abstract Expressionism, and is infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. Kusama is truly uncategorizable, and is celebrated as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan, and an important voice of the avant-garde.

Complete Writings 1959-1975

This is the complete, authorized collection of Donald Judd’s early art criticism and polemical writings; it includes his landmark essay “Specific Objects” plus more than 500 contemporary art reviews he wrote on key artists and exhibitions of the 1960s.

Complete Writings 1959–1975 was first published in 1975 by The Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and since then it has been the primary source for Donald Judd’s early writing. Working as an art critic for the magazines Arts, Arts Magazine and, later, Art International, Judd regularly contributed reviews of contemporary art exhibitions between 1959 and 1965, but continued to write throughout his life on a broad range of subjects. In his reviews and essays, Judd discussed in detail the work of more than 500 artists showing in New York in the early and mid-1960s, and provided a critical account of this significant era of art in America. While addressing the social and political ramifications of art production, the writings frequently addressed the work of such artists as Jackson Pollock, Kazimir Malevich, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, Lee Bontecou, Yayoi Kusama, John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, Kenneth Noland and Claes Oldenburg. Judd’s essay “Specific Objects,” first published in 1965, remains central to the analysis of the new art developed in the early 1960s. Other essays included in this publication are “Complaints I” (1969), “Complaints II” (1973) and his previously unpublished essay “Imperialism, Nationalism and Regionalism” (1975), all of which establish the polemical importance of Judd’s writing.

Donald Judd (1928–94) was born in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and after having served in the United States Army, attended the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, and Columbia University, New York, where he received a BS in Philosophy, cum laude, in 1953. Studying at the Art Students League, Judd began his artistic career as a painter and transitioned to three-dimensional work in the early 1960s. Throughout his lifetime, in his writings and his work, he advocated for the importance of art and the artist’s role in society.

This publication is devoted to the phenomenon of the artist novel, and whether it can be considered to be a medium in its own right within the visual arts. Visual artists create different strategies to integrate their novels into their practice. Introducing traits that are particular to narrative literature into the visual arts implies the accentuation of some features over others, such as narration, fiction, identification, and the act of reading and its protracted engagement, as well as distribution in public space. An artist’s approach comes fundamentally from the visual arts. The creation of an artist novel doesn’t differ from any other artwork. Both processes feed into each other as they evolve within the same body of works. Thanks to the contributions of a selected group of artists, writers, curators, and scholars this publication strives to demonstrate that literature, when treated by visual artists, can take place well beyond the space of the book.
