Atsuko Tanaka became a member of the Gutai group in 1955 as one of the few female artists in the group. Kindling the group’s spirit and experimental avant-gardism, Tanaka defied notions of art that were held previously, trying-out new materials and techniques in a bid to address and partake in the culture of the post-war art world. Bringing together the visual language of modernism with elements of Japanese traditional arts, Tanaka worked on abstract paintings as well as performance art.
