The original two-volume Japanese slipcase edition, published in conjunction with the exhibition “Love Forever: Yayoi Kusama, 1958-1968” which travelled between Japan and the US in 1999. This edition was available for the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo staging of the exhibition, and has been long out of print. Both volumes here are lavishly illustrated throughout with colour photographs of Yayoi Kusama’s history of work – the first book (“Love Forever: Yayoi Kusama, 1958-1968”) being a catalogue for the exhibition, featuring essays and documentation of the works in the exhibit spanning the years 1958-1968, including her New York happenings, whilst the second book (“In Full Bloom: Yayoi Kusama, Years in Japan”) illuminates many rarely seen works outside of Japan. Accompanied by texts, an interview and an exhibition history, this book is broken into the sections 1945-1959, 1970-1999 and is densely illustrated with colour documentation of her work created in Japan. Together chronicling Kusama’s life of creating work across painting, collage, soft sculpture, performance art, and environmental installations, of which most exhibit her thematic interest in psychedelic colours, repetition, and pattern, this comprehensive and collectable publication illustrates an extremely influential artist’s life of work. Based in conceptual art, Kusama’s work shows attributes of Feminism, Minimalism, Surrealism, Art Brut, Pop Art, Nouvelle Tendence (Op, Kinetic, etc.) and Abstract Expressionism, and is infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. Kusama is truly uncategorizable, and is celebrated as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan, and an important voice of the avant-garde.

Selected Works 1966-1986
First printing of this very uncommon exhibition catalog for a show of Robert Heineken’s work at Gallery Min in Tokyo, 1986. Illustrated throughout with many fine examples of Heinecken’s various bodies of works with numerous colour and some black and white photographs, accompanied by an introductory text (in Japanese and English) by Mark Johnstone.

“Heinecken transformed the possibilities of the medium and had a profound impact on many photography-based artists who studied with him. Influenced by Dada and Surrealism, especially Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and John Heartfield, Heinecken worked with numerous photographic techniques and materials, oftentimes combining them with various printmaking processes. In addition, to offset lithography and etching, he made use of film transparencies, photographic emulsion on canvas, gelatin silver prints mounted to wood (e.g., “Multiple Solution Puzzle” Series), Polaroid materials, mixed media collage and photograms (e.g., ARE YOU REA and Recto/Verso Series).”
Robert Heinecken (1931 – 2006) was an American artist who referred to himself as a “paraphotographer” because he so often made photographic images without a camera. In 1962, he founded the photography program at UCLA. He taught there until 1991. In 1964 he helped found the Society for Photographic Education, an organization of college-level teachers. He also taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where his second wife, Joyce Neimanas, was on faculty. They split their time between the two cities for several years before they moved to New Mexico in 2004. During his life he was mainly shown in traditional photography galleries, but two contemporary art galleries in L.A. began staging exhibitions of his work after his death: Marc Selwyn Fine Art and Cherry and Martin. Curators like Eva Respini at the Museum of Modern Art now place his work in a conceptual art lineage, associating him with Pictures Generations artists such as Cindy Sherman, John Baldessari and Richard Prince.

I Stand, I Fall
The publication I Stand, I Fall, a comprehensive survey of work by John Miller, coincides with the first American museum exhibition dedicated to the influential conceptual artist.
Through almost 150 images, this catalogue comprehensively traces Miller’s use of the figure throughout his career in order to incisively comment on the status of art and life in American culture.
The book features a range of media, including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installation and video; never-before-seen works from the 1980s; new large-scale sculptures; and the artistʼs most ambitious architectural installation to date – a vast and immersive mirrored labyrinth that went on view at the ICA Miami’s Atrium Gallery.
I Stand, I Fall, surveys Miller’s use of the figure in order to examine themes of citizenship and politics, and the conventions of realism in contemporary art.
