This now scarce, large monographic publication was published in 1998 to accompany an exhibition on the work of Haim Steinbach at Museum of Modern Art, Ludwig Foundation Vienna, 20er Haus, 22.11.1997 – 01.11.1998 and John Hansard Gallery, University of Southhampton 17.3. – 25.4.1998.
One of the best books on Steinbach, 0% contains abundant examples of work spanning from 1975 to 1995, in black and white and colour, running through each year, alongside numerous essays in both German and English by Lorand Hegyi, Stephen Foster, Brude Ferguson, Eve Badura-Triska, Michel Gauthier, Giacinto di Pietrantonio, Cornelia Lauf, Jen Budney, Eva Meyer, Jan Avgikos, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and Adachiara Zevi. Also includes a full biography/bibliography.
This copy also includes an inserted copy of the exhibition accompanying text/booklet (“The Display Ratio” by Michel Gauthier) and exhibition invitation/event programme, both from John Hansard Gallery.

For more than four decades, Haim Steinbach has explored the psychological, aesthetic, cultural and ritualistic aspects of collecting and arranging already existing objects. His work engages the concept of “display” as a form that foregrounds objects, raising consciousness of the play of presentation. Steinbach selects and arranges objects – which range from the natural to the ordinary, the artistic to the ethnographic – thereby emphasizing their identities, inherent meanings and associations. An important influence in the growth of post-modern artistic dialogue, Steinbach’s work has radically redefined the status of the object in art.

Robert Nickas
Live Free or Die


Robert Nickas is a critic, freelance curator, and editor of the Index magazine (New York). He is also one of the free spirits who were nurtured by the libertarian punk slogan “do it yourself”. In this collection, covering twenty years of activity, Nickas combines humour with intellectual rigor, as well as a reliable historical memory to broach works of personalities as diverse as Maurizio Cattelan, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Cady Noland, John Miller, Haim Steinbach or Andy Warhol, by way of David Cronenberg, Melvins, Père Ubu and numerous others, also slipping in untimely observations on the alleged death of painting, the “Golden 80s” of New York art world, and the role of the exhibition curator.

Working independently, Robert Nickas has realized more than forty exhibitions for galleries and museums since 1984. He recently co-curated the Biennale of Lyon in France (with the Consortium team), is an editor of Artforum, and a Guest Curator at P.S.1 in New York.
His writings and interviews have appeared in Afterall and Sound Collector, as well as in numerous catalogues and monographs – Felix Gonzalez-Torres, On Kawara, Olivier Mosset, Cady Noland, Andy Wharol.

Under the Clouds: from Paranoia to the Digital Sublime

Since the second half of the 20th century, we have lived under the shadow of two clouds: the mushroom cloud of the atomic bomb, and the ‘cloud’ of distributed information networks. How did the central metaphor of cold war paranoia become the utopian metaphor of today? ‘Under the Clouds’ explores the contemporary sublime that has replaced the natural one, and the interrelated effects and affects of these two clouds on life and work, leisure and love, and on images, bodies, and minds.
The post-war technologies of the emergent third industrial revolution have now evolved to fit in the palm of our hand; we no longer merely look at images, we now touch, scroll, pinch, and drag them. Where is the border between the self and its data shadow, between information, matter, and affect? The biological, economic, aesthetic, and political effects of living under the clouds has taken the form of new relations between data and material, as well as increasing debt and abstract financialization; the changing nature of work and sex; and new relationships between screens, images, and things. As earlier forms of technologically inflected art sought to mitigate the effects of change — both on perception and society — many of today’s artistic practices confront the myriad interfaces and decentralized networks that continue to shape and transform daily life, forming new evolving connections between bits and atoms.

The Artist´s Institute dedicates each six-month season to a single artist, whose work becomes the occasion for a series of exhibitions, public programs, and graduate seminars with leading contemporary thinkers in the fields of art, music, film, literature, science, art history, philosophy, and other creative pursuits. The first six seasons, taking place between 2010 and 2013, were dedicated to Robert Filliou, Jo Baer, Jimmie Durham, Rosemarie Trockel, Haim Steinbach, and Thomas Bayrle. In each context, the Institute convened private and public forums to reflect on each artist by reading relevant texts, displaying artworks, and programming related events, all of which are narrated in this book.
