Issue #104 of TzK examines a key protagonist of the modern age: the individual. As our cover suggests, there is an inherent tragedy to this being who, however autonomous, is beholden to a program that it must internalize at the price of suffering enormously. This issue takes up the individual not as a fixed subject, but as a mode of the self that shifts according to the current form of governance, asking how 15-some years of the “new spirit of capitalism” has shaped her – as an artist, as an entrepreneur, as a “productive” contemporary self.

Oscar Murillo
Work

This volume documents the first U.S. solo exhibition of Colombian-born, London-based artist Oscar Murillo (born 1986), held at the Rubell Family Collection in Florida in 2013. Over the course of a five-week residency, Murillo took over a 60-foot space at the Rubell, as well as its sculpture garden, to create 32 works, including five massive paintings, all of which are reproduced here. These works were informed by Murillo’s exposure to Miami’s Latin culture, as well as a weekend visit to his native Colombia and the gigantic proportions of the exhibition space itself.

3. Pertaining to a preeminent performer, athlete, etc.

Issue five of Modern Matter is dedicated to all things stellar: this is a homonym for its cover star, STELLA TENNANT, but is also a word which can be used to describe her. The interior space of a magazine is defined, by and large, by its writers, its artists and its photographers, while the outer space is often defined by a cover model. Here, Stella – iconic, playful, a born performer, and above all, independent – embodies the interior and the ethos of Modern Matter magazine, in its first truly unisex issue.
